Prescription drug prices and medication costs in the U.S. have risen sharply in the past few years, directly impacting everyday consumers, employers and commercial health plans, and government-run Medicare and Medicaid.

To address escalating prescription drug costs, the Trump Administration announced in November its intentions to launch “TrumpRx” in early 2026. While the full details of TrumpRx are not yet known (and will most likely continue to evolve even after the program rolls out), the White House has released general information about which types of prescription medications, brands and manufacturers may be included.

The most significant changes target medications used to treat some of America’s most widespread chronic conditions: obesity, diabetes and related heart diseases. Here’s what we know:

Diabetes medication, GLP-1s and insulin costs with TrumpRx

With more than 40% of Americans struggling with obesity — a key driver for conditions like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension — affordable prescription medications may provide immediate, life-changing relief for people hoping to use GLP-1s as part of a comprehensive plan to lose weight and prevent chronic conditions.

However, longer-term improvements in weight management, health and wellness may take more than just affordable prescription GLP-1 medication. Our Weight Loss Management program, led by family medicine physician Dr. Carolina Braga, blends affordable GLP-1 medication with realistic support, nutrition counseling, prescription drug management and goal-setting. Now onto TrumpRx and GLP-1s. Ozempic and Wegovy account for the highest annual prescription drug expenditures in the U.S., which has naturally pushed GLP-1 pricing as a focus point of this cost-containment effort. Under TrumpRx, a patient’s expected spend for Ozempic and Wegovy may drop from list prices of $1,000-$1,350 per month to just $350 per month.

The monthly cost of Zepbound may fall from $1,086 per month to $346 per month.

The costs of other diabetes medications will drop sharply under TrumpRX. Trulicity is set to cost $389 per month, and Januvia is expected to fall from $330 to $100. Jentadeuto, a Type 2 diabetes medication, will drop from $525 to $55 under TrumpRx.

Sanofi’s insulin products are set to start at $35 per monthly supply.

Brand-name pharmaceuticals to address costly and common health conditions will also be available through TrumpRx

Negotiations with participating pharmaceutical drug manufacturers are ongoing. Still, as of January 2026, nine companies have signed on to participate in TrumpRx: Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, Genentech, Gilead Sciences, GSK, Merck, Novartis and Sanofi.

Collectively, these major global pharmaceutical manufacturers will offer seriously discounted medication to consumers while also committing to invest at least $150 billion in American manufacturing.

Medications currently slated within the TrumpRx program range in function, cost and discount. While some of the included pharmaceuticals address more common conditions like migraines (which affect nearly 45 million people in the U.S.), treatments for less common conditions like multiple sclerosis and infertility are also in the TrumpRx mix.

Brand-name pharmaceuticals that are part of TrumpRx (as of January 2026) include:

  • Emgality, a migraine medication, is set to cost $299 per pen (a $444 discount from the list price).
  • Xeljanz, used to treat autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and ulcerative colitis, is expected to be available at a 40% discount to patients purchasing directly.
  • EMD Serono (the U.S. and Canadian subsidiary of Germany-based Merck KGaA) will offer its full portfolio of in vitro fertilization (IVF) therapies at reduced prices through TrumpRx.

The following prescription medications are also part of TrumpRx:

  • Repatha, a cholesterol-lowering drug — from $573 to $239.
  • Reyataz, an HIV medication — from $1,449 to $217.
  • Xofluza, a flu medication — from $168 to $50.
  • Epclusa, a Hepatitis C medication — from $24,920 to $2,425.
  • Advair Diskus 500/50, an inhaler for people with asthma — from $265 to $89.
  • Mayzent, Multiple Sclerosis medication — from $9,987 to $1,137.
  • Plavix, a prescription blood thinner — from $756 to $16.

Cost Plus Drugs

An agreement with Mark Cuban-owned Cost Plus Drugs will provide TrumpRx access to its application programming interface for real-time visibility into pricing. This emerging partnership illustrates the power of public-private partnerships and the use of data to cultivate broader consumer awareness and competition.

Medication costs matter, but so does prevention and trusted medical guidance

While TrumpRx may offer unprecedented financial relief from seemingly excessive prescription drug costs, effectively managing chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes and migraines requires personalized medical guidance and a longer-term relationship with a primary care provider or licensed healthcare practitioner.

Having access to lower-cost and affordable prescription drugs and medication is not the same as having a reliable, long-term plan to optimize your health. You should always manage and monitor your prescription medication with medical oversight from a trained professional.
